LEGISLATIVE

While taking on the roles of Representatives and Senators, students will research topics of local importance and write bills to be presented, discussed, and debated with their peers. To get started, download the Legislative Handbook with bill writing guide and committee procedures.

Develop an understanding of real life case law and the court system by serving as attorneys and justices while working through a criminal case. Get started by downloading this years case.

Research, interview, and report on all things happening in the program, along with real world events and issues of interest to the youth and government community. To find out more, download the Press Handbook.

LOBBYISTS

Work with Representatives and Senators to advocate for the passage and failure of bills on behalf of the Caucus Groups (e.g., Health & Wellness, Education, LGBTQ+, Business & Commerce). Learn about this important role by downloading the previous position papers.

Strengthen leadership and communication skills while running a campaign to become this year's Senate President or Speaker of the House, or next year's Governor, LT. Governor, or Attorney General. Announce your candidacy by filling the election forms.

Showcase your leadership skills by interviewing for Committee Chairs, Governor's Cabinet, Legislative Officers, and Justices. Submit your application below.

National Level

National YMCA Youth & Government conferences and competitions offer opportunities for students to represent their state, meet and learn from peers, and discuss and debate topics of national and international interest. Conference on National Affairs (CONA) is a legislative based conference held each July in Black Mountain, North Carolina. National Judicial Competition (NJC) is a Mock Trial and Appellate Court program taking place each August in Chicago, Illinois. Students will apply to join to represent Massachusetts at these events, and participate in several training sessions throughout the spring.
